2009 SCARTS Shootout Format

The plan is to run the SCARTS Shootout perhaps the same day as the Truck Series season opener. I've thought long and hard about a plan for the 3rd annual event, and Derek and I have agreed on the following format.

This race traditionally is an 'elite' event which means there needs to be a cap on the number of drivers. For an auto entry in the event, the top 3 drivers in terms of 'Top 3' finishes from Season 2 will be locked in as starters ("The Top Three of Top 3s" as I'll call it.) In this case, Burnout, Pilburn, and Scorpio will be locked spots in the race.

Three down, but how many drivers total? I'm planning on six, a nice comfortable number of racers for this special event. That means 3 drivers left to fill. There are two other ways a driver on the outside looking in can earn entry into the race.

1- Finish in the Top 2 in a qualifying race.
2- Win a popular vote

Preceding the SCARTS Shootout, we will run a 35 lap Go-or-go home qualifying race entitled the 'Daytona Dash', much like last years format at Dega. However unlike last year, this'll be a one segment race, with standard SCARTS rules applying. There will be timetrial qualifying for the Dash to set the lineup but there will be no timetrials for the Shootout itself. The top two finishers of the Daytona Dash will be granted entry into the SCARTS Shootout main event. But there is still hope if a driver fails to finish in the Top 2, a fan vote. I will be accepting your votes through MSN for who you want to see in the Shootout race. Basically anybody except Burnout, Pilburn, and Scorpio are acceptable picks. Everyone may vote for two drivers, but you may NOT vote for yourself.

Here is a list of drivers signed that may be fan voted in:
-AOD1857, Burn, DerekE, DOC, Drillz, Fastman65, Jurgen, Klutch, Kooler, Lexx, Raptor

If the winner of the fan vote transfers into the race, the next popular vote will be used. If that person also transfers, the third most votes will get in. Each driver may send two people they would like to see in the race, a primary choice and a secondary. A primary choice counts as 2 votes, a secondary as 1 vote. I'll tally up the points and announce a winner following the qualifier race. I won't post this online as I want it to be a surprise come raceday!

So we'd have a six car field ready to go. The starting lineup for the Shootout will be:
1st-Burnout (The Most Top 3s)
2nd-Pilburn (Second Most Top 3s)
3rd-Scorpio (Third Most Top 3s)
4th-Winner of Qual Race
5th-Runner-up of Qual Race
6th-Fan Vote

Hope to see you all for that race as well as for the Truck race on May 17!

No fan vote for me this year again, I'm taking the Qual race. Also, are racers that are already qualified allowed to compete just for fun in the Qual Race, just wondering.

That was the original thought, but that would have screwed Fastman and Kooler from being able to compete. This way, everyone has a fair shot at making it.

I'm trying to make the votes secret so the winner will be announced AFTER the qualifier race for the Shootout. Those competing in that first event shouldn't know for sure they are locked in the race by votes. Motivates them to race harder in that race to make the Shootout field.

And yes Scorpio, you are locked in. I based the elligibility on the three drivers who scored the most Top 3 finishes last season (Burnout, Pilburn, and Scorpio). Everyone else must race their way in or win the fan vote.
